Les chiens Akita (« inu » signifie chien en japonais) ont été élevés au rang de monument naturel au Japon. Ils ont pris le nom de leur région d'origine : la préfecture d'Akita, montagneuse et rurale. Le chien Akita le plus connu est sans aucun doute Hachiko, dont la fidélité lui a valu une statue à Shibuya.
Akita a des chiens, et des kokeshi – l'artiste sosaku Miura Setsuko a réuni ces deux mascottes en une poupée.
